Road Safety First: Vanda University Hosts Ministry of Interior for Traffic Law Workshop
PHNOM PENH, February 26, 2026 — As the Royal Government of Cambodia reinstates stricter nationwide traffic law enforcement this month, Vanda University hosted a vital training workshop titled “Safety of Public Road Traffic.” The event brought together over 200 students to learn directly from top law enforcement officials about the “Fatal Four” risks and the importance of civic responsibility on the road.
Insights from the Frontline
The university was honored to welcome two distinguished speakers from the Land Traffic Police Office of the Ministry of Interior:
- Lieutenant Colonel Ly Visal (Deputy Director)
- Lieutenant Colonel Suon Borin (Deputy Director)
The experts provided an in-depth look at the current state of Cambodian road safety, emphasizing that while fatalities dropped by nearly 3% in 2025, human error still accounts for approximately 98% of all crashes.
The “Safety Toolkit” for Students
The workshop focused on practical, life-saving information tailored for young adults and motorcyclists, who remain the most vulnerable road users in the Kingdom:
- Speed Management: Understanding that speeding is the leading cause of fatal accidents (47%).
- The Helmet Mandate: Reinforcing that helmets are a legal requirement for both drivers and passengers.
- Zero Tolerance: Discussing the dangers of driving under the influence and the new, stricter penalties being enforced as of February 2026.
- Right of Way: Clarifying often-misunderstood rules regarding intersections and lane discipline in urban areas.
A Culture of Responsibility
From our perspective at Schools Cambodia, this workshop is incredibly timely. With the National Police announcing a “tightening” of enforcement to meet the Pentagon Strategy goals, students who are well-versed in the law are less likely to face fines and—more importantly—less likely to become a statistic.
By inviting the Ministry of Interior to speak, Vanda University is fostering a “safety-first” culture that protects its greatest asset: its students.
