Medical Innovation: UHS Discusses Research Collaboration with Cuba’s Center of Molecular Immunology
PHNOM PENH, February 16, 2026 — Leadership from the University of Health Sciences (UHS) convened a high-level meeting today with a delegation from Cuba’s renowned Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM). The discussion, held at the UHS International Campus, focused on establishing a strategic partnership centered on medical research and the development of specialized human resources.
Representing UHS, Assistant Professor Eang Rothmony (Vice Rector) and Assistant Professor Kim Sothea met with Dr. Rodriguez, Head of Business Development for CIM, to explore how Cuban expertise in biotechnology can benefit the Cambodian healthcare sector.
Focus Areas for Future Collaboration
The dialogue identified two primary pillars for the upcoming partnership:
- Human Resource Development: Creating pathways for Cambodian medical professionals to receive specialized training in molecular immunology and biotechnology.
- Joint Research Studies: Collaborating on clinical research, particularly in areas where Cuba has global standing, such as cancer immunotherapy and the development of innovative vaccines.
Why the Cuba-UHS Connection Matters
Cuba is internationally recognized for its “South-South” cooperation in medicine and its ability to produce high-tech pharmaceuticals at affordable costs. For UHS, this collaboration offers:
- Access to Biotech Expertise: CIM is a world leader in producing monoclonal antibodies and therapeutic vaccines.
- Research Opportunities: UHS researchers may soon have the opportunity to participate in international-standard molecular studies.
- Strengthening National Health: Developing local expertise in immunology is critical for Cambodia’s long-term strategy in treating non-communicable diseases.
This meeting marks the first step toward a formalized agreement that could see a new generation of Cambodian “scientist-physicians” training alongside Cuban experts.
