AI and Global Research: NIPH & Soonchunghyang University Forge New Health Frontiers
PHNOM PENH, February 16, 2026 — In a historic ceremony held on Monday, the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) officially entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Soonchunghyang University. This collaboration aims to revolutionize how Cambodia manages Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) through the power of AI and international research exchange.
Strengthening Research & Technology
Under the leadership of H.E. Professor Chhea Chhorvann, the NIPH is positioning itself as a regional hub for medical innovation. The agreement with the South Korean university focuses on:
- AI Integration: Leveraging machine learning and big data to predict, prevent, and manage chronic conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
- Knowledge Exchange: A bilateral flow of technological expertise and academic experience between Cambodian and Korean researchers.
- Joint Research Projects: Collaborative studies designed to create “Made in Cambodia” health solutions backed by Korean technological standards.
A Look at World-Class Facilities
The delegation from Soonchunghyang University, led by Professor Yoo Byung Wook, was given a tour of the NIPH’s state-of-the-art facilities. A highlight of the visit was the National Orthopedic Medical Laboratory, which holds a prestigious ISO 15189 plus certification from Canada.
This certification is a gold standard in the medical world, ensuring that the laboratory meets rigorous international requirements for quality and competence—providing a perfect foundation for AI-based research.
Why AI for Non-Communicable Diseases?
NCDs are often called “silent killers” because they develop slowly over time. AI can analyze vast amounts of patient data—from lifestyle habits to lab results—to identify risks long before symptoms appear. For Cambodia, this means moving from a reactive healthcare system to a proactive one, potentially saving thousands of lives through early intervention.
