Theory in Action: Western University Students Explore Business Excellence in Siem Reap
SIEM REAP, March 3, 2026 — Over the course of a dynamic 3-day, 2-night expedition, students from Western University traded their lecture halls for the historic landscapes of Siem Reap. While the trip served to promote national tourism, its core mission was an intensive “Field Theory” study of business management processes at two of Cambodia’s most sophisticated entities: Angkor Wildlife & Aquarium and Artisans Angkor.
Case Study 1: Angkor Wildlife & Aquarium
Students moved beyond the visitor experience to analyze the complex operational management of a world-class conservation site. The focus included:
- Logistics & Supply Chain: Understanding the massive coordination required for animal care and life-support systems.
- Service Management: Observing how high-volume tourism is managed while maintaining a premium guest experience.
- Sustainability as a Business Model: Analyzing how conservation efforts can be structured as a profitable and sustainable enterprise.
Case Study 2: Artisans Angkor
At this legendary social enterprise, the students focused on the management of traditional craftsmanship within a modern global market:
- Quality Control: Learning how Artisans Angkor maintains the highest standards of silk and stone carving across multiple workshops.
- Human Resource Management: Observing the integration of social missions—providing employment for rural communities—with a competitive business structure.
- Marketing Heritage: Analyzing how traditional Khmer art is branded and positioned for international luxury markets.
Promoting the “Heart of Cambodia”
From our perspective at Schools Cambodia, this trip fulfills a dual purpose. Not only are these students sharpening their professional skills, but they are also acting as ambassadors for Cambodian Tourism. By sharing their experiences, they highlight Siem Reap as a destination that is both a historical wonder and a hub of modern business innovation.
We congratulate the faculty and students of Western University for a successful field trip. Seeing the “Management Process” in action at places like Artisans Angkor is the best way to prepare the next generation of Cambodian entrepreneurs.
