Discovery and Independence: CIS Students “Make Their Mark” Beyond the Classroom
PHNOM PENH, February 25, 2026 — Education took an adventurous turn this week at the Canadian International School of Phnom Penh (CIS) as students participated in the highly anticipated Discovery Week. Designed to push students out of their comfort zones, the week-long initiative focused on experiential learning, teamwork, and building the “global citizen” mindset.
Shared Experiences, Lifelong Skills
Discovery Week is a cornerstone of the CIS Elementary School program, offering a variety of activities that traditional textbooks cannot replicate:
- The Campus Sleepover: For many students, this represents their first step toward true independence, learning to navigate personal responsibilities and peer bonding in a familiar yet transformed environment.
- Collaborative Challenges: Team-based tasks designed to foster communication, creative thinking, and the ability to work toward a common goal.
- Horizon Broadening: Activities that connect students with the wider world, helping them develop the empathy and compassion central to the IB World School philosophy.
Why Discovery Matters
From our perspective at Schools Cambodia, these immersive weeks are essential for holistic development. When students participate in Discovery Week, they aren’t just having fun—they are developing:
- Confidence: Overcoming new challenges in a supportive community.
- Social Maturity: Building deeper relationships with peers and teachers through shared challenges.
- Global Competence: Understanding that learning is a continuous process that happens everywhere, not just at a desk.
