Toward Global Glory: Highlights from the WT Taekwondo National Championship 2025
PHNOM PENH, February 22, 2026 — The National Olympic Stadium’s Booyoung-Khmer Training Hall buzzed with energy this weekend as the WT Taekwondo Tournament Select National Championship 2025 came to a successful close. Under the high presidency of H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, the event marked a critical milestone for Cambodia’s martial arts community.
A Platform for Future Champions
Organized with the strategic support of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), the championship served as a high-level assessment for athletes aiming for international success. The tournament provided a vital opportunity to evaluate talent ahead of major upcoming events, including:
- The 20th Asian Games in Japan.
- The 34th SEA Games in Malaysia.
- The ASEAN University Games.
- The Asian Youth Games, which Cambodia is set to host.
Tournament at a Glance
The competition, held from February 21 to 22, 2026, showcased the growing reach of Taekwondo across the Kingdom:
- Participation: 214 total participants from 34 different clubs.
- The Athletes: A field consisting of 96 male athletes and 66 female athletes, supported by 52 coaches.
- Diverse Representation: Clubs traveled from Phnom Penh, Kandal, Battambang, and Banteay Meanchey, alongside teams from the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of National Defense.
- The Challenge: Competitors tested their skills across 21 distinct tests.
“One Youth, One Sport”
During the ceremony, H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron praised the influx of new talent and emphasized the government’s commitment to the slogan: “A young person must know at least one sport in his life”.
The Minister highlighted that sports are now integrated into both regular study hours and part-time classes at educational institutions. Beyond physical health, Taekwondo is viewed as a tool to cultivate 21st-century skills, perseverance, and a strong patriotic conscience among Cambodia’s youth.
