Strengthening Early Numeracy: MoEYS and UNESCO Host Grade 1 Math Workshops
PAILIN & RATANAKIRI, February 2026 — In a major push to improve primary education standards, the Primary Education Department of MoEYS, with support from UNESCO, has launched a five-day Capacity Building Workshop. From February 21 to 25, 2026, 474 Grade 1 teachers across Pailin and Ratanakiri provinces are gathering to master new teaching methodologies and the use of specialized mathematics material packages.
A Multi-Dimensional Approach to Math
The workshop, opened by Dr. Kan Puthy, Head of the Primary Education Department, focuses on moving beyond traditional rote learning to a more interactive and data-driven approach:
- Instructional Mastery: Teachers are gaining in-depth insights into the Teacher’s Guidebook and standard assessment books to better support student growth.
- Effective Toolkits: Participants are learning how to effectively use the Grade 1 math material package to make abstract concepts tangible for young learners.
- Inclusive Environments: A core focus is placed on classroom management and gender equality, ensuring all students have an equal opportunity to thrive.
- The “5R” Process: Educators are trained to use evaluation information within the learning process through the 5R framework.
Digital Transformation in the Classroom
A highlight of the seminar is the integration of the Primary Digital Paths (PLP) platform. Dr. Kan Puthy encouraged teachers to embrace this digital tool to:
- Track Progress: Monitor student learning in real-time with digital data.
- Targeted Intervention: Use concrete data to provide timely support to students who may be struggling.
Hands-On Experience
The five-day session isn’t just theoretical. Teachers are participating in live demo classes with students, practicing the JIGSAW group discussion method, and learning how to provide constructive feedback to their peers. By the end of the workshop, these educators are expected to return to their classrooms ready to build a “strong mathematical foundation” for Cambodian children.
